Targeting ISIS

Yesterday, New Zealand media was abuzz with news reports about likely participation of New Zealand in targeting ISIS. Prime Minister John Key is weighing all his options and has sought a report from the MFAT. Mr Key will take this issue to the Parliament but ultimately it is going to be his sole decision. Opposition parties are already taking this Parliamentary process with a pinch of salt as the content of MFAT report are unlikely to be-fully-tabled in the Parliament.

In a way it appears to be a homework exercise preparing for the forthcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit. It will be a good move to arrive in Brisbane having taken a decision to send New Zealand SAS troops for taking up intelligence and logistics focused roles against ISIS. Appropriate for New Zealand, set to get non-permanent membership on 16 October 2014 to the UN Security Council for the 2015-2016 term.
